The escalating cost of virgin cellulose fibre is causing the papermaking industry to re-cycle increasing quantities of waste paper. The resulting residue, which may be 20% of the input, is wastefully disposed of by landfill, landspread or incineration. Around four million tonnes of waste paper are being re-cycled each year in the UK and this is expected to rise significantly.The proposal is to mix the wet sludge residue with a blend of binders and moisture resistant polymers, press it into slabstock and dry it at the papermill, before selling it to fabricators for manufacturing wall panels. This will reduce disposal costs for the papermill, minimise environmental pollution and create a useful low-cost construction product with the compressive strength of building blocks and the working properties of timber. Key elements of the panel design are fire resistance, simple edge connections and overall cost.
