Summary on Grant Application Form
The long-term goal is to develop a microfabricated acoustic cavity for the manipulation of nanoparticles (in suspension) which is gravity and orientation free in functionality and independent of particulate concentration. This will provide a generic technology for a diversity of fields of application. Several functional and manufacturing problems exist which may be resolved by the employment of microfabrication techniques. Critically, these problems include the repeatable precision fabrication of an acoustic cavity with high Q characteristics. In particular, the machining of channels with vertical walls and to a controlled depth ( <100nm/mm lateral dimension) and the parallel alignment of stacked substrates has to resolved.Microengineering techniques have the potential to allow the fabrication of resonant chambers for frequencies up to 100 MHz. Experience gained in the development of the 12 MHz chamber, proposed here, will determine the approach for future fabrication of such higher frequency chambers. The output of this work will provide for an informed choice of microfabrication technologies (eg LIGA) to match different industrial application requirements (precision, market volume, etc).
