A programme investigating the synthesis of chiral-at-silicon tertiary silanes has been devised. The studies are categorised as follows:(i) The synthesis of characterisation of a range of novel zirconium complexes bearing mixed cyclopentadienyl-amido and bis-amido ligands will be undertaken. Chiral substituents will be placed at the nitrogen (eg a-methyl benzylamido) and on the ring (eg menthyl).(ii) An assessment of the value of such compounds for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral silanes will be made. Investigations by chiral chromatography, optical rotation and X-ray crystallography will determine the absolute configuration and anantiomeric excess. The development of catalytic variants of these preparations will be undertaken.(iii) The use of chiral-at-silicon silanes for the asymmetric hydrosilylation of ketones, with chiral alcohols the final products, will be investigated.(iv) A second generation of C2-symmetric organometallic zirconium complexes will be prepared, thereby allowing a full investigation of the role of symmetry in catalytic asymmetric hydrosilylation.
