Self-excited oscillations are commonly observed during flow through 3-D collapsible tubes, but these cannot yet be computed. Recent numerical computations for a 2-D geometry, in which part of one wall of a rigid channel is replaced by a membrane under tension, predict the onset of self-excited oscillations at critical values of Reynolds number Re and membrane tension T. They also reveal that vorticity waves are generated by the separating flow over the oscillating indentation, and suggest that the details of the separation are a crucial part of the oscillation mechanism. We intend to investigate the problem experimentally, in an approximately 2-D rig, in order to confirm (or otherwise) the predictions of the critical values of Re and T, and to measure the velocity field (and, later, the pressure) in the crucial separated flow zone during oscillations, for better understanding of the mechanisms.
