Summary on Grant Application Form
Current development at the SRS and ESRF have opened up the applicability of energy dispersive EXAFS (EDE) to observe time dependent local structural change occurring in heterogeneous catalysts. The proposal involves the construction of a pulsed microreactor cell held on a precision translation mount. The in situ cell will be used to assess the time and spatial resolution attainable on the beamlines 9.3 at the SRS and 8 at the ESRF. The expectation is that the latter could provide resolution of better than 1 ms and 0.01m2 for oxide supported transition metal catalysts with 23 wt% loadings. This will be applied to relatively uniform catalysts synthesised by surface organometallic methods. These will emanate from systems synthesised by the investigators (eg Rh/TiO2 for NO/CO and CH4 activation; organopalladium-modified ALPOs for alkene oxidation; mesoporous MCM-41 supported nickel phosphine complexes for alkene oligomerisation), those of interest to BP Chemicals (eg, supported [Rh(CO)2I2] carbonylation catalysts), and those developed by international collaborations (eg Zr-hydride/SiO2 for C-H activation; Zr-cyclopentadienyl/SiO2 for alkene polymerisation; Rh/SiO2 for hydroformylation.
