Summary on Grant Application Form
This research proposal is part of a joint proposal by teams at Heriot Watt University and the University of Essex. The overall proposal is concerned with the provision of a Core Simulator Engine (CSE) to allow integration and simultaneous operation of both simulated and real sybsystems on an unmanned underwater vehicle. The objective is to demonstrate methods by which real subsystems can be incrementally integrated, using simulation and/or software stubs to mimic the behaviour and/or the data formats of subsystems not present. This thread of the joint proposal will initially use the first prototype CSE developed in phase I to demonstrate real and simulated subsystems operating together in the laboratory. Candidate missions involving tethered and untethered vehicles will be used as a focus. It will then progress to using the phase II CSE in a similar fashion. Ideally, a small tethered UUV will be employed in the Ocean Systems Lab test tank to provide credible demonstrations to industrial sponsors.
