Summary on Grant Application Form
The VF will re-examine the oscillatory contribution to surface MA in Fe Co and Ni films using the insight gained from the clear-out oscillations found in Pd/Co/Pd as a function of Pd thickness, these being unexpectedly associated with quantum well states in Pd. The calculation of interface MA will be reformulated in real space using the recursion method, checked against k-space calculations for perfect interfaces, and applied to investigate the effect of roughness and steps on MA for fcc (001) Co and interface MA in Pd/Co and other systems. A k-space supercell method, as we are developing for exchange coupling, will also be used for comparison.
