Summary on Grant Application Form
Diffusion in acoustics plays an important role in determining the acoustical quality of buildings, particularly in rooms where clear speech and quality of music is required. If diffusion is incorrectly modelled this can lead to poorly built space where, for example, public announcements may be inaudible, or the acoustics may detract from the quality of a musical performance. At present no reliable, physically rigorous definition exists for a coefficient to characterise the diffusion process. This results in much confusion in the modelling of diffuse reflections and application of diffusing surfaces. The research of the applicants and others has shown that a diffusion coefficient is now needed to enable accurate predictions of room acoustics, and also to evaluate the relative worth of different diffusing surfaces, this project will facilitate innovation in the design and use of diffusing surfaces. It will also enable the development of more physically meaningful diffusion modelling algorithms. This will then enable architects and acoustics consultants to design and build better buildings. This timely proposal draws on the considerable research experience of the applicatants and the collaborating company in the study of diffusing surfaces and room acoustic modelling.
