Summary on Grant Application Form
High performance disk drives increasingly operate at linear densities or wavelengths where non-linear effects are important. Experimental measurements together with analytical and micromagnetic models will be used to establish the inter-relationship between non-linear signal and noise effects, to provide a comprehensive model of non-linearity.Disk drives require media with an acceptable signal to noise ratio at their operating frequency, and for future drives this will mean media with low noise in the non-linear region. Experimental nanostructured ultra-low noise recording media will be essential for this purpose and will be used in conjunction with a wide range of commercial media to verify the findings. A proper understanding of the inter-relationship of various fundamentally different methods of characterising media noise will be central to this study. The project is one part of a major collaboration between the Universities of Bangor, Coventry, Manchester and Salford who are all making linked applications, and is also in collaboration with industry.
