Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this research is to measure the chain conformation of a nematic, main-chain liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) as a function of polymer molecular weight and the nematic field strength using small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Hydrogenous and perdeuterated copolyester-azine and copolyether-azine LCPs have already been synthesized. The SANS results will be compared with contemporary theories of the chain conformation of nematic polymers. In addition, the kinetics of the conformational changes that occur at the transition between the isotropic and nematic phase will be determined from temperature jumps between the isotropic and nematic phases, also using SANS. The effect of the nematic phase on internal modes of motion and on Rouse modes will be determined using neutron quasi elastic scattering and netron spin-echo spectroscopy. The results of these experiments are expected to have implications with regard to the prediction and development of macroscopic properties of LCPs, such as the dielectric, optical and mechanical properties.
