Summary on Grant Application Form
The synthesis of thioether donor macrocycles incorporating mesogenic side groups will be investigated and liquid crystal formation monitored. The ionophores to be studied will be polythioether crowns functionalised via hydroxy and keto groups on the C-backbone of the ring. Thus, new tetrasubstituted [16]aneS4, trisubstituted [12]aneS3 and disubstituted [14]aneS4 and [18]aneS6 ligands will be prepared. Liquid crystal formation will be monitored by microscopy differential scanning calorimetry, and related to the structural motifs within the material. The effects of varying ring-size, donor groups of the macrocycle, the peripheral groups, counter-ions, and the presence or absence of metal ion on liquid crystal formation will be investigated. The incorporation of metal ions into these crown systems will be targeted towards the preparation new redox-switched liquid crystals, and the study of magneto and ferroelectric properties.
