Due to various limitations of the established equilibrium approach to modelling traffic assignment in road networks, a number of research teams throughout the world are seeking to develop alternative, day-to-day dynamic simulation models of travel choice. These have great potential, particularly for modelling route, guidance, congestion pricing and responsive traffic signals. However, equilibrium approaches have a sounder theoretical basis (concerning existence, uniqueness, calculation, convergence characteristics, etc) which has been built up over the last thirty years. This proposal seeks funding for non-staff costs, to support an EPSRC Advanced Fellowship already secured with the aim of developing an equivalent theoretical basis for day-to-day models, following the objectives stated above.
