Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to develop reliable and general methods for predicting the rate of cross-flow ultrafiltration of colloids. The predictive methods will be general and in terms of three physicochemical parameters: the osmotic pressure, the gradient diffusion coefficient and the rheological properties. These will in turn be calculated from three readily measurable particle properties: particle radius, particle potential or charge, particle Lifshitz-Hamaker constant. Solution properties - ionic composition, ionic mobilities, temperature, dielectric permittivity - are also explicitly included in the calculations. The predictions of the three physicochemical parameters will be independently verified experimentally. They will then be incorporated in a finite element based description of the fluid flow and mass transfer in flat sheet, hollow fibre and tubular membrane modules to give prediction of the rate of ultrafiltration. These predictions of filtration rate will be experimentally verified. The predictive methods will be incorporated in an menu-driven PC package to facilitate use by beneficiaries.
