Summary on Grant Application Form
Piloting underwater vehicles is a very demanding task, especially in confined environments where the risk of damage, expense and sometimes danger of recovering a vehicle makes improving a pilot's awareness of the vehicle's environment a research priority. We propose a system that embeds the emerging technology of high-speed, realistic Virtual Reality (VR) systems with data fusion from a variety of sensing domains to improve the accuracy of pilot displays. By using a commercial VR software package to hold an environmental model, and forming a closed-loop control system by fusing this information with sensory data from onboard systems such as GPS (Global Positioning System), INS (Inertial Navigation), tilt, heading and pressure measurements, the system can calculate an initial positional estimate. This is then used as the basis of an attentive visual feature search in optical and sonar imagery.
