Summary on Grant Application Form
This work follows on from a two-year design study under the first phase of TUUV, which explored in detail the benefits of electric thrusters for underwater vehicles of the work class, for surveillance and maintenance on oil and gas rigs. There is a strong case for electric thrusters replacing the standard hydraulic type, to substantially improve efficiency and increase mean time between failures by a factor of about 5. The most attractive possibility centres on the applicants' proposals for an integrated thruster, embodying a permanent magnet motor, with the electromagnetic and hydrodynamic features integrated into a single unit. The aim is to develop, design, construct and test, two prototype integrated units, the first based on design studies from the first phase, the second benefiting from further basic research to be conducted in this second phase. Two industrial companies (one to be confirmed) will collaborate, one of whom expects to proceed to manufacture.
