Summary on Grant Application Form
The global aim of the proposal is to make a quantitative and correlated set of measurements of the spatial spectra of hydrodynamic perturbations of laser driven targets using various optical smoothing schemes envisaged for direct drive fusion and also to use deliberately generated single mode optical intensity patterns. A newly developed measurement technique, XUV laser radiography will be exploited to give data with better resolution and more information than has been available previously. The work will be backed up by computer modelling studies in order to establish a good physical understanding of relevant processes. The totality of the information will be used to draw conclusions on the viability of direct drive ignition target designs.
