Hydrophilic polymers, which are capable of absorbing and transmitting water witni their structres while maintaining film-wise wetted surfaces,are proposed as coatings on etallic heat-exchanger surfaces. This research programme is aimed at identifying the thermal and hydraulic performances, under a range of temperatures (above and below 0 degrees C) and humidities, of two alternative material systems; (i) high-strength hydrophilic structures synthesised using novel monomer systems, including graft coploymers; and (ii) interpenetrating network structures. These will be applied to metallic substrates using four disparate coating techniques, specifically chosen to avoid problems of delamination during hydration of the polymeric hydrophilic coating. Once the preferred materials and coating techniques are known, optimal designs for specific heat-exchange applications (e.g. low temperature change HVAC and solid polymer fuel-cell implementations) will be determined.
