Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is aimed at identifying the scope and limitations of polymerisation reactions involving methyl methacrylate and Lewis acids bearing a range of chiral ligands. The starting point will be the excellent preliminary results for isospecific reaction with titanium enolates and ate complexes involving novel chiral alkoxides as ligands. The range of chiral Lewis acids will be investigated and a number of novel oxygen- and nirogen ligands will be evaluated. Important model enolates of dimeric structures will be synthesised and crystallised in order to obtain suitable structural information and to enable molecular modelling of ground and transition states for the reaction. Chiral auxiliaries will be employed on the methacrylate building blocks to enhance the information of chiral helical polymers. Metallocene catalysts will be systematically evaluated and the analysis will be extended to acrylates as well.
