Summary on Grant Application Form
Neutron scattering techniques will be used to study the structures of rare earth multilayers and hence to determine the nature of the magnetic interactions. Multilayers and alloys of the light rare earths, including Ce, on a variety of substrates, will be studied as well as the effect of applying a magnetic field to heavy rare earth multilayers and then multilayers combining rare earths with other metals. The low-dimensional magnetic systems containing Cu ions with s=1/2, have large quantum fluctuations and properties very different from normal magnets. Applying a field to an s=1/2 antiferromagnet is predicted to produce an incommensurate phase and we wish to study this experimentally. Strongly paired s=1/2 spins have a singlet ground state and excitations to a triplet state. Experiments will be performed to study these systems and the crossover to antiferromagnet order. Experiments will also be performed to test the theory of Rb2, MnF4 and also to study two length scales and geometrical frustrations.
