Summary on Grant Application Form
The recent availability of FE forge modelling packages for the P.C. has meant that industrial process modelling has advanced rapidly in a short time leading to digital product specification. The prediction of the resulting forged microstructures is much less well advanced. Existing approaches are based on look up tables summarising large arrays of experimental observations taken from idealised experiments, or attempt to use state of the art metallurgical models to predict changes from first principles. Our aim is to examine the feasibility of developing neural network methodologies capable of 'learning' the art of microstructural control on the basis of previous forging experience. It is hoped that this will lead to: a reduction in the amount of experimental data required for reliable modelling, a faster development of digital microstructural control which can be directly incorporated into exisitng FE. packages, greater flexibility, quantitative assessment of prediction reliability, the identification of the key process variables and conditions.
