Three groups of optically active vinyl monomers will be prepared. In the first an electron rich monomer unit (eg styrene, alk-l-ene) will be covalently linked to an electron deficient monomer unit (eg fumarate) by a chiral bridge. The second will involve divinyl esters of appropriate chiral templates (eg camphoric acid, tartaric acid). The third group will be chiral metal complexes in which some of the ligands will be polymerisable monomers (eg 4-vinyl-pyridine). Each optically active vinyl monomer will be polymerised by free radical means to yield corresponding polymers and copolymers. The chiral auxiliaries will be cleaved or decomplexed from the latter to yield polymers and copolymers with intrinsic optical activity arising from the configuration of sterogenic centres in the mainchain, induced during propagation in the presence of the chiral auxiliary or template. These strategies should substantially increase the methodologies available for synthesising optically active vinyl and related polymers, and make a much wider range of these available for further exploitation.
