Summary on Grant Application Form
We shall investigate the effects of unsteady tubulent incoming wakes on the boundary layers developing over typical turbomachinery compressor and tubrbine blade profiles, by large-eddy simulation. The simulations will be fully evaluated against experiments, and will be carried out by established techniques, with some innovations necessary for these ambitious flows. The simulations will yield direct qualitative data of direct use in constructing closure models of the flows. A number of simulations will be carried out at intermediate resolution, and one definitive finemesh simulation of unsteady flow over the LA turbine blade profile. The resulting data will be utilised in cooperation with Rolls-Royce, Cambridge University, UMIST and London University.
