Summary on Grant Application Form
It has been estimated that every member of the UK population now demands the extraction of approximately 5 tonnes of aggregates per year. However, recycling may not necessarily be the Best Practical Environmental Option (BPEO) for all construction and demolition waste in all circumstances. The aim of this proposed research is to develop a lifecycle assessment (LCA) methodology which will measure the environmental, social and economic impacts of alternative methods of disposal and recycling of construction and demolition waste in a given location. It is proposed to carry out two or three case studies on the recovery or disposal of specific construction or demolition materials. The data from the case studies, plus that from published sources, will be fed into a LCA which will determine and compare the local and global impacts from different methods of waste management, including re-use, recycling and landfill. From the case study and LCA work a more general software model will be produced which will allow both waste regulation authorities and the construction industry to determine the BPEO for individual waste streams taking into consideration economic, social and environmental criteria.
