Minor impurities are frequently removed by the addition of a reagent element which combines with the impurity to form a solid phase which then floats to the top of the melt. Occasionally, the reagent element is retained in the metal. This proposal suggests an electrochemical way of achieving the same result without the addition of a reagent element so that no oxides, etc form. This should result in a much higher quality product with far less waste. It is also proposed to perform the electrochemical separation in a recessed electrode cell which offers considerable advantages over existing electrorefining cells.
