Summary on Grant Application Form
In Phases I-III of this EPSRC (MTD)/Industry Managed Programme, the overall response of filament wound GRP pipes to local impact by projectiles of various shapes, sizes and velocities has been studied. the resulting data have been presented in graphical form and can be used as part of a risk assessment by designers of piping systems used offshore. In the proposed project a detailed examination of the local, though-thickness damage mechanisms will be made by conducting a carefully defined set of experiments to describe and categorise the various modes of damage produced in the pipe (eg matrix cracking, delamination, fibre breakage etc). This information will be used to guide the construction of a mathematical model for the damage processes utilising a new damage model for matrix cracking which is finite element based and which includes matrix cracking as the major damage mechanism. This model will be adapted to include the effects of the other damage mechanisms observed in the tests. This will enable damage levels and patterns to be predicted for such pipes. Subsequent modelling will assess how this damage is linked to longer-term performance of the pipes such as the leakage rate of fluid from the pipe and its burst pressure.
