Many industrial manufacturing processes require linear motion. The classical solution is to use a rotary electrical machine together with a complex mechanical transmission. It is the main objective of this research to eliminate the rotary linear converter in two demanding applications. In the first of these a new form of machine will be developed to produce both rotary and linear motion for use in 200, 000 rpm spindles for printed circuit drilling machines. In the second a high precision controller using a linear machine will be developed for use, with a linear air bearing slide, in the positioning of an aerodynamic spindle in imagesetting applications. The programe is a collaborative venture between Westwind Air Bearings and Bath University. The partners have complimentary skills. Westwind is a world class company in the air bearing field and is skilled in the computer aided design of air bearing spindle systems. Bath has many years of practical experience in the design of linear machines and has also developed a comprehensive finite element modelling caqpability for electro-magnetic systems design.
