This work will determine the fatigue of three fibre reinforced plastic systems under environmental conditions experienced offshore. Specimens will be subjected to fully reversed four point bending of various levels whilst exposed to the environment until failure occurs. From this data ?- N curves will be constructed (c.f. S-N curves for the characterisation of fatigue in conventional materials). To complement the fatigue life tests, selected specimens will be extracted prior to failure and subjected to NDT and destructive tensile tests. These results will be used to determine strength and modulus reduction due to fatigue and to investigate the feasibility of characterising fatigue damage non-destructively.The conditioning environment will mainly be sea water at ambient temperature, but a limited series of tests will be undertaken at a higher temperature and in another environment. In addition to fully reversed bending fatigue, a limited number of specimens will be fatigued by cyclic tensile-tensile loading.
