Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme is a collaborative venture between GEC-Plessey Mass Storage Business Unit and researchers from the Information Storage and Signal Processing Research Groups at the University of Manchester and brings together academic and industrial researchers with complementary experience and expertise. The primary aim is to investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, the use of partial response signalling in optical data storage channels. A complete channel model will be developed that will be capable of assessing system performance, in terms of error rates, SNR, jitter etc, over a wide range of channel parameters. Particular emphasis will be placed on future-generation PRML channels, and a number of novel optical as well as the more conventional electronic equalisation schemes will be investigated for channel shaping. In additional to the theoretical work, a complete disc test system will be commissioned for the experimental verification of model predictions. Promising processing schemes will be implemented in silicon by GEC.
