Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal aims to combine the multi-disciplinary but complementary expertise of the Principal Investigator and Co-investigator in order to develop new theoretical and methodological approaches to the recursive estimation, interpolation and forecasting of space-time data, with particular reference to adaptive calibration of weather radar data. The research programme will be carried out in collaboration with the National Rivers Authority who will provide all rain gauge, radar rainfall and flow data plus associated remove data equipment to a total of 77,000.The theoretical aspects of the work will aim to deliver a flexible class of space-time stochastic models based on a spatial extension of the classical Kalman filter used in dynamic series modelling, together with associated statistical methods for model estimation, data-interpolation and short-term forecasting.Implementation via a MATLAB toolbox with customised GUI will facilitate transfer of the new methodology to the user community.
