A high temperature conditioning and testing technique, developed in the Phase III Composites Offshore programme, will be extended to permit the testing of composite tubulars under biaxial loading conditions. Damage and failure processes will be monitored and failure events recorded. These data will be resolved and used to plot ply-based failure enveloped for three commercially significant composite systems at high temperatures in liquid environment. The degradation process will be monitored and modelled using a damage mechanics approach and the results presented in a form compatible with current design practice for FRP. In addition, an investigation will be carried out into the feasibility of using various non-destructive testing techniques to characterise the effects of the environmental damage on the composite systems. Ultrasonic and acoustic emission techniques will be evaluated.
