Summary on Grant Application Form
Although the development of cordless multimedia applications is still very immature, it is now recognised that multimedia services will be a major driver for the deployment of broadband communications. A programme of research is proposed which will investigate the use of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) as the access mechanism for delivering multimedia services to applications residing on cordless terminals. The multimedia services will be delivered over an ATM network, and the research will investigate the optimal architecture for interconnecting WLANs via ATM. When considering the interconnection of ATM and WLANs, the location of the UNI has considerable effect upon the overall performance, and on the quality of service which can be offered to the applications. Effects of provisioning the UNI at key points in the overall network architecture will be examined. The research will also attempt to model the pertinent characteristics of multimedia applications, and this will be used by the network management system to describe the applications networking requirements for a given access type (fixed or cordless). Results will be validated using a range of applications (database, video conference, collaborative working and application sharing), which demonstrate multimedia usage in the UK Fashion & Textile Industries.
