Cost often percludes use of sine-current AC/DC converters. An active filter of relatively small VA rating and low cost can compensate the harmonic current interference of traditional AC/DC bridge rectifiers in one or more drives with large VA ratings. Performance with steady-state loads is good. However, the sampling and processing / filtering of supply current to identify the necessary compensation involves a large time lag. Active filters therefore perform poorly with drives in repeated transients.Adaptive modelling of the non-linear properties of the rectifiers together with drive command signals can predict current distortion so the filter anticipates rather than responds and correctly cancels interference and does not mistakenly draw (potentially large) fundamental currents. Various prediction techniques using adaptive filters, neutral networks and neuro-fuzzy systems will be assessed, initially through simulation. Testing will use an active filter built around a 50kVA commercial inverter and drives incorporating diode amd thyristor rectifiers. Speed of response and prediction will be assessed. The demonstration will show supply current waveforms which comply with utility and EN standards. The voltage supply can cause reference frame orientation problems and these will be assessed.
