This project seeks to develop new techniques of high spatial resolution microanalysis based on the electron energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) from transition metal carbides and nitrides. The aim is to use the energies of the ELNES features to determine both the local composition and the local lattice parameter as this offers significant advantages over conventional methods. The new techniques will be applied to the study of coatings produced by cathodic arc evaporation. Here, there is also the possibility of assessing the internal stress in the coatings. The aim is to provide data to improve the predictability and consistency of the process. At present, the theory of ELNES is not sufficiently developed to interpret such spectra directly so that well characterised standards are required. These will be synthesised by developing new molecular precursors and extending the range and utility of self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) and solid state metathesis (SSM) reactions. The results obtained from these materials will be compared to those from materials prepared by more conventional methods. The results obtained will also be of use in the development of the theory of ELNES and its relationship to the electronic structure of the materials and hence their mechanical layout is the result and a bug in v 2.1b.
