Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to continue our programme of research into the properties of matter at microkelvin temperatures, a field where we continue to operate at the forefront of what is technically possible. We wish to exploit our existing lead in cooling superfluid helium-3 to the lowest possible temperatures by furthering our knowledge of this unique material in the low temperature limit. Our specific plans include the following:1. to extend our work on the dynamic properties of the excitations in superfluid helium-3 at the lowest temperatures, where nearly all current experimental knowledge has been gained by our group.2. to extend the low temperature range of NMR measurements in the liquid to examine the new long lived coherent excited states where again a large fraction of existing work has been done in this group.3. to study the properties of dilute solutions to lower temperatures.4. to take advantage of our current expertise in low temperature techniques by devising new and more reliable ULT methods.
