Summary on Grant Application Form
A procedure has been found to control diastereoselectivity in radical cyclisations involving 1, 6-dienes and mediated by disulfides. Our aim with this programme is to extend the scope of the reaction to other dienes and reactive substrates; to develop intermolecular and asymmetric variants and to apply this technology in target synthesis. Analogous reactions mediated by other heteroatom centred radicals will also be examined. Noteworthy features of this method are 1) that the reactions are simple to perform and clean; 2) employ disulfides which are less toxic and less expensive than trialkylstannanes and 3) retain functionality about newly created carbon to carbon bonds.
