Summary on Grant Application Form
Existing monitoring equipment developed under BT funding by Loughborough will be enhanced to monitor network application traffic. A Loaded Network Emulator (LNE) will be developed consisting of a high performance PC and two ATM cards. Typical network applications will be determined and characterised under various known network loadings using the monitor station and the LNE, an ATM switch at Loughborough, and the ATM test bed at BT Martlesham. The effect of these loadings on the applications will be marked according to pre-determined criteria. Such criteria will vary for different types of application. A database of grades and network conditions will be established. A system of agents will then be implemented and deployed on a network such as the Internet or the SMDS element of SuperJanet. These will monitor the network and determine the appropriate grade for each of several potential services. These grades will be made available to applications in an efficient manner using a simple scoring metric. Information relating to application network usage and sensitivity to loading can also be made available to ATM network managers involved with provision of bandwidth. The LNE tool will be made available to enable new applications to be assessed in the future.
