Summary on Grant Application Form
I propose to calculate the structure of the vortex lattice in Bi2 Sr2 Ca Cu2 O8 using anisotropic London theory, if appropriate, or Laurence-Doniach theory, if not. Once the structure is understood the elastic moduli will be calculated. This has direct relevance to the melting and pinning of the lattice. I will also calculate the crossing energy of flux lines. This is necessary to understand the onset of longitudinal resistivity in superconducting materials.
