Summary on Grant Application Form |
Human listeners are remarkably good at understanding speech in background noise. Psychophysical studies have shown that listeners employ a number of simple strategies to segregate speech from the background. We have developed a model incorporating amplitude modulation maps based on physiological and psychophysical data and have demonstrated its utility for segregating simultaneous synthetic vowels. This technique will be applied to real speech. The model will be enhanced in three key areas:1. The spectral resolution of the speech representation will be enhanced using the 'reassigned spectrogram'2. A grouping strategy based on fundamental frequency will be implemented. A model based on explicit pitch tracking will be developed and compared with a model that uses pitch cues implicit in the AMap representation.3. A grouping strategy binding synchronous events will be implemented and integrated into the system. Strategies to resolve conflicting grouping decisions will be examined.A demonstrator system will be developed.
