Summary on Grant Application Form
Efficient and adaptable numerical methods for the simulation of incompressible viscous fluid flows are the goal of this project.Investigations will be based on the geometrically flexible finite element method solution of the steady state Navier-Stokes equations. These will comprise theoretical and practical studies of alternative formulations, adaptive mesh refinement based on a posteriori error estimates and an effective preconditioned iterative solution technique. These key aspects are interconnected and as well as their consideration in isolation, we will consider their interaction in an overall solution procedure. In particular we will consider both stable and (Galerkin least squares) stabilised mixed finite element formulations employing triangular and tetrahedral elements. The stability or stabilisation of approximations on stretched and/or distorted elements as might arise from adaptive refinement will be investigated. Mesh refinement will be in response to residual-based a posteriori estimates of solution errors . The derivation and consideration of appropriate estimators will be a substantial part of the project. The systems of equations resulting from the adaptive approximation will be solved with a preconditioned iterative method: consideration of effective preconditioners will also form an important aspect of the project.
