Summary on Grant Application Form
Supercritical fluids (SCFs) have a number of advantages as chemical processing media but there are numerous operational drawbacks, particularly the low solubility of polar compounds. this proposal describes the development and characterisation of new sc-CO2 systems which can have potential for overcoming these problems. The solubility of polars in CO2 can be enhanced by using dispersions of nanometer-sized reversed micelles, and/or microemulsion droplets. In order to form surfactant aggregates in sc- CO2 hybrid surfactants must be used: these are di-chained, with separate fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon hydrophobic tails. Owing to the novelty of these systems it is essential to determine fundamental properties of the surfactants and the water-in- CO2 (w/c) microemulsions. This information will be used to optimise the system characteristics for enhancing the solubility levels.
