Summary on Grant Application Form
The GUIDE project will develop a working prototype of a context-sensitive multimedia visitor guide. This will consist of a pen-based portable PC equipped with a Global Positioning System PC card and an AT&T WaveLAN PC card. These cards will enable the guide to accurately determine its position (differential GPS will be used) and to download multimedia information pertinent to that location from any one of a number of fixed base stations. The information downloaded will be presented using existing WWW browsers. The project will focus on two major research issues. Firstly, the provision of effective transmission of multimedia information over low-bandwidth wireless links. A range of protocols, catching strategies and filter agents will be developed to deliver satisfactory performance. Secondly, the project will address the wider issues of context-sensitive computing. A comprehensive architecture for constructing applications of this nature will be specified and implemented. It is anticipated that this architecture will be of significant benefit to future developers of context-sensitive applications. The completed GUIDE prototype will be deployed in the city of Lancaster for a field trial using multimedia information content supplied by Lancaster City Council. A detailed evaluation will be carried out based on the results of this trial.
