Summary on Grant Application Form
The utility industries are responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of electricity, water, gas and telecommunications services to domestic, commercial, public sector and industrial users. Clearly therefore, the integrity of the supply network infrastructures is of key importance. This research project is to focus on the development of high bandwidth mobile networks to support multimedia applications which are specially tailored to meet the needs of the utility industry. In particular, a novel multimedia network architecture is to be created to form access to NORWEB Communications existing high bandwidth network. Here wireless LAN access will be provided to the nearest electricity sub-station from where communications with multimedia databases and control room staff can be achieved. The research will then explore the benefits of enabling remote teams of field engineers to gain access to up to date high quality geographic, technical and visual information and in addition, to provide a live video feed back to a central site. In this respect the research is seen as providing the next generation of co-operative working applications and networks.
