Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to measure, analyse and predict the harmonic losses which occur in inverter fed induction machines when operating under various loading conditions to greater precision than that which has been achieved to date. The experimental work is based upon a specially controlled inverter, precision measurement and a version of balanced calorimetry. The former techniques have been developed, while the latter has been refined, in two PhD projects at Nottingham. The analysis of the loss mechanism uses specially instrumented machines and monitors rotor position, and phase and magnitude of currents and fluxes for comparison with the predictive model. The rate of temperature fall of components inside the machine after switching off is monitored to confirm by comparison with sinusoidal excitation where the additional losses actually occur. This information will assist the modelling of the machine with a view to predicting losses. The modelling approach uses a combination of analytical, finite element and reluctance mesh field models to obtain good accuracy with the minimum of compuation. The results will be of great benefit to the drives and motors industry enhancing competitiveness. Additonally, the project will enable the development of improved drives and motors which operate with greater efficiency.
