Summary on Grant Application Form
The propagation and interaction of ultra-intense short laser pulses with plasmas and solid targets will be studied in the strongly relativistic regime. In particular the proposed programme involves the investigation of whole beam self-focusing, channel formation, overdense propagation and magnetic field generation in plasmas where the laser-plasma interaction is dominated by the relativistic quiver motion of the electrons. In addition the absorption of short wavelength ultra-short laser pulses in solid targets will be measured at intensities around 1x10 (to the 19) Wcm (to the -2).
