Summary on Grant Application Form
This project concerns the development of sensors to give on-line quality assurance information during the joining processes for high strength, coated sheet steel structures and node sections using mainly fusion welding (MIG, Plasma Laser) and hybrid joining techniques (spot and adhesive welds). The applicants have developed many sensor techniques over the past years based upon such techniques as CCD and infrared cameras, vision systems, structured laser light, transputers and ultrasonics. In the case of fusion welding these techniques will now be used to inspect the joint before welding, to observe the weld formation and to examine the post weld state. For hybrid joining techniques the sensors will examine the placement of the spot welds and the adhesives and their combined ruggedness after adhesion has taken place.
