Summary on Grant Application Form
Sceptic is an executable specification language that we have developed for the rapid development of cognitive models of cognitive processes. The present proposal is to extend the usability of Sceptic by developing a set of libraries and a graphical interface to those libraries that is more in keeping with the box/arrow style of theorising used by many cognitive scientists. The interface will exploit recent developments in object-orietated programming, concurrent computation, and software engineering to provide a flexible, user-friendily environment in which computationally non-sophisticated theorists may specify and develop models of cognitive processes. The proposed work will include a survey of the literature and users to determine precise requirements, the formal specification of a system wich meets those requirements the implementaiton of that system, the use of the system in two large-scale simulation case studies, and the dissemination (with inital user support) of the complete documented system to the wider research community.
