Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks resources to enhance the stray field (STRAFI) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facility at Surrey by the addition of pulsed field gradients in the central homogeneous region of the magnet. The additional gradients are required for new experiments which will uniquely probe the drying and film formation of alkyd emulsion paints and sodium silicate adhesives. Currently, no facility in the world exists that is capable of performing both STRAFI and MR microscopy simultaneously on the same machine and under the same conditions. Furthermore, no other technique exists to characterise liquids as they simultaneously solidify and are absorbed into a porous substrate. We will focus our research on the film formation of alkyd emulsions and sodium silicate solutions, addressing such issues as crosslinking, partitioning, and water loss. With cooperation from our industrial partners, this research will directly aid the commercial development of water-based paints and adhesives, both of which are less damaging to health and the environment than their solvent-based alternatives.
