Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to investigate the processes of acoustic phonon-assisted tunnelling in the barrier tunnelling devices (DBRTDs) both in Zero and magnetic fields. The experiments consist of measuring the change in the tunnelling induced by a sense of non-equilibrium phonons. Our recent measurements showed this to be a ?-phonon process leading to a peak in assisted tunnelling whose position varies nearly wit phonon frequency. We first plan a detailed study of assisted tunnelling through an impurity level in delta-doped samples. This will include the temporal evolution of the tunnelling signal and the dignal dependence on the incident angle of the phonons and the direction of the magnetic field. We shall then extend the investigations to assisted tunnelling through confined states in both symmetric and asymmetric structures. The aim here will be to obtain further understanding of the tunnelling processes and to achieve the narrowest possible signals and so optimum frequency resolution. We shall then use the device to study the frequency spectrum of the phonons emitted from DBRTDs (in collaboration with Dr J K Wigmore, Olancaster Univeristy) and from the entry and exit corners of a Hall bar in the quantum Hall regime in order to obtain detailed information on the processes of energy relaxation.
