The technique of particle image velocimetry (PIV) is to be used to measure the pattern of flow velocities of recirculation in a thin shell and tube slice representing an axial section of a kettle reboiler. Simultaneous measurements of pressure and heat transfer coefficient distribution will provide data for subsequent quasi 2-D circulation modelling of the flow in bundles of plain and enhanced tubes at heat fluxes up to 60 kW/m(2) . These models will be developed in co-operation with a world leading British heat exchanger design organisation and will be incorporated in design software. Resulting improvement in performance prediction of kettle reboilers will improve network integration in many applications in which they are incorporated in chemical processing . The project will also be concerned with development of PIV methods in bubbly flows to measure simultaneous liquid and bubble flow velocities at as high a void fraction as possible.
