Short-period metal/metal superlattices will be grown in the form of wires approximately 100nm in diameter and several mm long by electrodeposition in the pores of nanoporous nuclear track-etched polycarbonate membranes. These wires will be suitable for studies of electrical and thermal transport perpendicular to the layers of the superlattice. In particular, they provide an extremely convenient way of studying current perpendicular to plane giant magnetoresistance (CPP - GMR), a topic of considerable topical interest. The superlattice nanowires will also be used as a model system for studying interactions in ensembles of magnetic particles. The possibilities of using membranes prepared by deep X-ray lithography and of growing single-crystal nanowires will also be explored.
